Saison de la Lituanie en France | ME TWO / WE, THE CLIQUE | Dryads of Conquer
2024/11/05 • 18:30 - 20:30
Dance performance for (non-)teenagers “me two / We, the Clique” at the prestigious Museum of Contemporary Art “Frac Sud” in Marseille, France!
As part of the Global Neighbourhood concept – one of the key concepts of the Lithuanian cultural season in France 2024, of which “me two / We, the Clique” is a part – this performance explores the legacy of hip-hop by promoting a competitive but safe world without borders, by using cultural connections and community rituals, and by raising questions about the development of art and cultural forms.
For many people, sport is not only synonymous with competition and excitement, but also with inclusion. This links with the belief of Lithuanian archaeologist Marija Gimbutas that a connection to ancient, peaceful, nature-honouring societies can inspire contemporary culture. Marilyn Talumaa and Justė Kostikovaitė’s project “Dryads of Cosquer” is in line with this vision. As part of the Lithuanian Cultural Season in France 2024, the project combines an exhibition, an artist residency, a film screening, a discussion and a dance performance for (non-)teenagers “me two / We, the Clique” by the Vilnius City Dance Theatre “Low Air”. This performance explores conflict resolution and the question of collective power, echoing Marija Gimbutas’ ideas of harmony and renewal. Exploring questions of identity and combining hip hop dance as a social practice with breakdancing, the latest Olympic sport, “me two / We, the Clique” proposes to explore a new form of identity enriched by the practice of sport as ritual.
The presentation of this performance and the extended activities of the company are part of the Lithuanian Season in France (Saison de la Lituanie en France 2024). We are grateful to the Lithuanian Council for Culture and the Vilnius City Municipality for partially funding the production and dissemination of the performance. We are grateful to the Lithuanian Culture Institute for funding the season programme.
