Dance classes are open to both complete beginners and those who already have experience in contact improvisation. Contact Improvisation (CI) is a dance/movement practice in which dancers maintain physical contact with a partner or group.
The most important elements of this practice are touch, the use of one’s own and one’s partner’s weight, gravity, and various somatic (body awareness/perception) exercises.
In these classes, we will learn how these elements can interact together – we will learn the basics of contact improvisation and perform various improvisation exercises. In contact improvisation, we try to avoid preconceptions about gender, appearance, and body type, and encourage concentration on what is happening here and now – how can we discover movement with anyone?
It is important that when in physical contact – touching – students feel safe and comfortable, so groups are divided by age – teenagers and adults.
These classes will help you get to know and strengthen your body more deeply, find ways to move together with a partner or group, and discover the pleasure in it.
The content of the classes varies – sometimes we will engage in deep physical meditation, and sometimes in physically active exercises. Students will have the opportunity not only to engage in this practice during classes, but also to adapt it to various dance styles and dance/movement performances.
