Dance Day: The City as a Body – Outdoor Games
International Dance Day Celebration, April 29, 2024
Can the practice of dance in an urban neighborhood, when done outside of the ordinary, become a developing direction of movement for our new daily ritual experiences? And can the space of our neighborhood open up to movement games that are not bound by rules of age or physical limitations? Can we experience the city and the courtyard in a new way by reviving old outdoor games and transforming them through the language of contemporary urban dance? What choreographies do we, as urban dwellers, movers, and dancers, create through repetitive movement, both individually and as a community?
On April 29, in celebration of International Dance Day, we invite you to join an unconventional outdoor dance practice, where movement sequences spark the imagination, and together we create more active experiences of being in the city and in the courtyard. We hope that the recurring movement games, street dance, and contemporary dance will invite you to join in, while choreographed routines and synchronized group gatherings will encourage observers to simply watch or reflect on the dancers as participants in this shared moment of play. Perhaps you’ll want to keep the dance going all year round?
