Dance Day: The City as a Body – The Passage of Time in the Body of Šnipiškės
Celebration of International Dance Day on April 29, 2025
On April 29, we invite residents and visitors to celebrate International Dance Day in a lively, physical way—through movement, play, and unexpected choreography that takes place not on a stage, but in the city’s squares, alleys, and courtyards. We invite you to experience dance that is not staged, but lived.
This year’s celebration of International Dance Day takes us to Šnipiškės—one of Vilnius’s most contrasting neighborhoods, where the wooden Shanghai district still preserves remnants of a rural spirit in the city center, while newcomers, glass skyscrapers, and accelerating urbanization are shaping an ever-changing everyday life.
As wooden architecture disappears and new layers of glass and concrete emerge, it is not only what we see that changes, but also how we move. Movement becomes a reaction to these changes—it no longer follows old paths, but seeks new trajectories through courtyards, crossings, between cracks in the pavement and the shadows of skyscrapers.
In this context, dance becomes not only an aesthetic act but also a tool for exploration—an opportunity to rediscover a place that is changing before our eyes. The body remembers what the city forgets and creates what does not yet exist. As the neighborhood constantly changes, so does our relationship with it. When the city changes, movement can no longer remain the same—it reacts, resists, or adapts, transforming alongside it. The transforming city shapes the body as well—movement becomes a response to the changing environment; movement becomes an exploration—a way to embody, empathize, and intervene.
At this crossroads of urban change, we invite you to dance—not only with your body, but also with your mind. Let’s use this unconventional practice to reimagine the ordinary urban experience: let’s step beyond the boundaries of daily routine and experience courtyards, alleys, and squares through contemporary and urban movement. Let’s discover together new territories for building in the neighborhood and more active ways of building in the city.
We invite everyone to participate—both dancers and spectators.
