//series: Opening Future #1
What does it mean to curate in the hybrid landscape of contemporary (performing) arts?
How should one speak and write about one’s creative practices in order to present them to curators, competition organizers, or other event organizers? What do organizers of residencies, festivals, and projects hope to achieve when formulating calls for proposals, concepts, and event outlines? What is curation in the context of hybrid creative practices, when genre boundaries are blurred? How—and can we—curate ourselves? What does it mean to take a work from the stage into public spaces?
These and other questions are just a few of those that Daina Pupkevičiūtė, Andrew Gryf Paterson, and Mauricia Barreira Neves pose to one another as they reflect on their hybrid roles and the curatorial, creative, production, and other practices they encounter. Laurynas Žakevičius will introduce the discussion and the project concept.
We invite representatives of the performing arts and other fields, curators, cultural managers, and other interested individuals to join this open discussion.
We invite participants to register.
*** The event will be livestreamed on the @LowAirDanceTheatre Facebook page. Registered participants will have the opportunity to reflect on the discussion and ask questions of the speakers.

Andrew is one of the curators of the Pixelache 2021 festival in Helsinki, taking place at the Central Oodi Library. More here: https://agryfp.info
Mauricia Barreira Neves is a contemporary dance creator, choreographer, and producer. Mauricia’s repertoire includes both works she consistently constructs from costumes to soundtracks, as well as international interdisciplinary collaboration projects. Her works are deeply political and poetic. The climate crisis, pollution, criticism of neoliberalism, consumerism, alienation, and exclusion—these and other themes repeatedly intertwine in the visual and movement narratives Mauricia constructs. ABOUT
The circumstances of the pandemic encourage us to rethink, explore, and create innovative perspectives for cultural activities initiated by performing artists, which will help performing arts professionals develop new competencies for professional self-realization, such as creative entrepreneurship, curation, arts management, and community engagement.
Cultural entrepreneurship is often treated by the creators themselves as simply doing business. This is an invitation to view it as a whole comprising the self-realization actions of innovative performing arts professionals and the expanded opportunities for self-empowerment, helping them discover and ensure the continuity of their professional activities by creating innovative products and/or services, thereby expanding the circle of future audiences and fostering sustainability within the performing arts ecosystem.
